search-friendly urls

July 2008

Take a look at these two website addresses or URLs:

http://www.chasenrainbows.com/sitepages/pid3.php

http://www.chasenrainbows.com/maui-vacation-rentals/luxury-condos.php

Notice the difference? One is seemingly meaningless while the other is very descriptive.

The second URL uses the new URL Rewrite Module built for the Site Management Console (SMC). This new SMC Module has been developed to provide you with an easy-to-manage solution for giving your site pages more meaningful, useful and search engine-friendly URLs.

It's true – Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines are more likely to favor a descriptive URL, rather than the standard non-descriptive SMC generated URL ( such as /sitepages/pid123.php ). In addition, these descriptive URLs allow for more of your site pages to be indexed for "long tail" search keywords.

Maui Luxury Condo Rentals

For example, go to Google and search for "maui condo rentals" and you'll see that our client, Chase 'N Rainbows, appears third in the natural search results. Click-thru on their listing and you'll land on their homepage. Now Google "maui luxury condo rentals" and notice the corresponding change in the results pages – Google has added the "luxury-condos" page to the results as a subset beneath the main listing! Click on that listing and you are sent directly to the "luxury-condos" page, delivering the user to the most relevant information possible.

Not only does this new feature help give your rankings a boost in the search engines, but it also helps improve the user experience. It allows you to more effectively cross-market specific sections of your site, and makes your pages easier to remember for the end user.

To enable the URL Rewrite Module on your SMC, a one-time setup fee of $800 is required. In return, we will enable the new module and rename your pages with search engine friendly URLs. Please contact us or email your dedicated search account manager to get moving on this important enhancement today.
