Yellowstone Cowboy Cookout Flying Pig Style:
The Flying Pig's twist on a local tradition that will leave you wondering how you could possibly top this day of your vacation. 8 mile raft trip + a soak in a hot spring + 1 hour horse ride + chuck/wagon family-style dinner. Your adventure will begin at 12:30 when you check in for a ½ day raft trip on the Yellowstone River. After rafting 8 miles, we will bring you back to the shop to dry off, and provide directions to the Boiling River (a free undeveloped hot spring in the park... 3 miles from our shop... (see detailed description below). Soak in the natural hot tub till it is time to depart for your evening adventure.
You will drive to our high mountain ranch and take a 1 hour horse ride with views that will "knock your socks off"... you might even see elk, bears, deer, antelope, and rattlesnakes. As you start getting back to the ranch, you will smell what is coming up next... A full scale Montana-family-style chuck/wagon dinner. No one will leave disappointed, or hungry. Stay at the ranch and watch the sun set on the mountains and the stars come out. There are no other lights visible from this secluded retreat so the night sky is stunning!! Campfires will be going and s'mores can be roasted.
Act early and make reservations now, we only have 20 spaces on this trip a day and several dates in July are starting to sell out. If sold out our paddle/saddle trip is a close substitute.
Local Pick & Recommended Hike: Beaver Ponds Loop near Mammoth Hot Springs
This intermediate 6 mile hike will take you through some of the few old growth forests that did not burn in the famed 1988 fires of Yellowstone. Talk to the friendly rangers at the Mammoth Ranger station and they will point you toward the trail head... it can be a bit tricky. The trail will gain about 600 ft in elevation before leveling off and linking up with the Beaver Ponds Loop. You will wander through groves of 600 year old Douglass-Fur Trees and then find yourself in an open meadows (great spots for pick nicks), before coming to a series of small lakes. The trail is well traveled so you won't loose your way, but take some time to wander off the trail a bit. This is a major place where Bull Elk "shed" their horns. It is not uncommon to find 4-6 foot antlers within 200 yards of the trail. If you are lucky, and do find one of these antlers... take a picture and check it out, but do not take it back with you. The Park Service levies heavy fines for such actions. The trail will meander on providing some stunning panoramic views and passes through a couple of aspen groves... then you will find yourself back where you started and ready to head down the short hill to Mammoth Hot Springs.

Insiders Yellowstone Tip: Soaking in Yellowstone's Hot Springs
There are very few places where you can actually soak in Yellowstone's famous thermal features. Geysers Gush, Mud Pots Bubble, Hot pools abound; but the National Park Service will only allow visitors to swim in a couple of locations in the park... and it is an experience you will never forget. The Boiling River is located 3 miles inside the North Entrance of the park... Just before the 45th parallel. Park your car in the lot on either side of the road and follow the trail upstream for about ½ mile. This is where the underground water from Mammoth hot springs merges with the Gardner River. Visitors have constructed pools in the river to channel the hot water to make the ideal natural hot tub. Don't be scared to float down stream because some of the best pools are about 40 yards down where less venturesome tourists don't go. The temperatures vary greatly depending on where you are sitting, so explore a bit to find the spot that is perfect for you. Then relax and Watch the Wildlife. You can even see trout feeding along the thermal features if you bring goggles or a mask. This is one of Yellowstone's greatest secrets... Don't miss it. Sorry all you closet hippies... clothing IS required
