Romantic Alta.
In 1935, the Forest Service sent Alf Engen, one of the most famous skiers
of his day, on a scouting trip into the old wild west mining town of Alta,
and what Mayor Watson liked to call “Romantic Alta” was changed
forever. The single-chair Collins lift opened in 1939, offering single rides
for 25 cents apiece, or $1.50 to lay down fresh tracks the entire day…and
no lift lines! That year also saw the opening of the Snowpine and Alta Lodges,
with the Rustler, Alta Peruvian and Goldminer’s Daughter to follow
over the next thirty years. We like to think Alta still retains most of
that original glory of opening day in 1939—still small, still skiers-only,
and the friendliest lodging around. |
