GREETINGS FROM GUNNISON.
Excitement abounds. Recent news: the Water Wheel Inn was named 'Best
Place to Stay in 2010' by our Chamber of Commerce and named a host
hotel for the upcoming Quiznos Pro Challenge next August by the local organizing committee -- international pro cycling returns to the Rockies. Yahoo, but I'm getting ahead of myself. The real excitement is seeing the white stuff all around. Winter is here with a warm, radiant sun, blue skies and white mountains.
Take a break from the I70 corridor, come down Highway 50 (or, better, fly in) and sample the winter offerings in the Gunnison valley. For downhill thrills, we offer screaming deals with discounted lift tickets to Crested Butte and Monarch Mountains. But, that is just the start. We have ice fishing (with the largest fish in the state), indoor and outdoor ice skating, the state's deepest and longest snowmobile season, fabulous cross country skiing, skating and snowshoeing. We have it all. And, no crowds, too. We'll be waiting for you. Call and plan your fun.
|Highlighting Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain
We are lucky enough to have two of Colorado's best ski areas in our backyard. This month we get to hear from the ski school directors at Crested Butte Mountain Resort and Monarch Mountain. Enjoy!
Nick Herrin is the Director of Resort Services and the Ski and Ride School at Crested Butte Mountain Resort
A ski instructor since 1994, I began in Washington State at Ski Acres Ski Area (now known as Summit East), working for John Mohan's Ski School. The next nine years I spent teaching at Big Sky Resort in Montana, where I ran the training program at the Big Sky Ski School. After that, I moved south to Colorado to work as the assistant director for the Telluride Ski and Snowboard School. Still in Colorado, I am now the director of the Ski and Ride School at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.
For the past 7 years I have been a member of the PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors of America) National Alpine Team. As a member of the team, I have worked on building curriculum in the snowsports industry, continuing to enhance all guest experience on their ski trip. I have also won several 1st and 3rd place finishes in National and World Powder 8 Championships.
"I am really happy to be living in Gunnison and working in the Valley. I have traveled all over the world and visiting many ski schools and I can truly say Crested Butte has some of the most experienced, friendliest and patient staff in the industry. We hope on your next visit to Crested Butte Mountain Resort we see you out on the hill!"
Director of Resort Services
Jack Sciacca is the Director of Instruction at Monarch Mountain. He is an active member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America and is Level III certified by the organization to teach all levels of alpine and telemark.
Sharing the Passion
Twenty six years ago I began dabbling in the profession of ski instruction. I was fortunate to get my start at a small ski area in Northern New Mexico. Ski Sugarite was a privately owned, "mom and pop" ski area located physically in Southern Colorado but accessed only through Raton, New Mexico. It was touted to be New Mexico's only Colorado ski area. One Saturday I had a large family from Oklahoma with people of all ages and abilities show up for ski lessons. Some made it off the lift and down the hill; others built a snowman. I learned a great deal from that experience. It's not all about making Olympic skiers. It's about helping people enjoy their own experience on the mountain.
The philosophy of guiding an individual experience is at the core of my professional beliefs. It is incumbent for an instructor to broaden his or her own experiences to be able to facilitate the motivations of a guest. The process of growth and development comes natural to those who are inspired by the beauty of the environment that we work in and the thrills associated with the critical interactions between snow, people and gravity.
My personal growth and development was challenged in 1994 by a construction accident that crushed my right leg. In the first few days following the mishap there was a great deal of discussion about the probability of amputation. I kept my leg and one year later I was back on skis. The first season back I skied on my good leg and worked to retrain the injured tag along. In the course of that first season, I met a 14 year old self determined skier who inspired me to not only ski on two legs again but to compete. The following ski season we began traveling to Powder 8 competitions as a team.
I have been at Monarch Mountain for ten years. I look forward to the moments every season when my guests succeed at their goals. Last season 10 year old Emily began linking short radius telemark turns with a pole touch. As I marveled at her success I asked her how it felt to be "so good", "so young"? She raised her goggles so I could see her smiling eyes. As she poked in the snow with her pole, her one word answer was magnified by the blue skies reflected in her eyes and the glint of sunlight off her teeth. "Awesome," she said. Then she turned and danced down the hill with joy and excitement present in every turn. "Awesome!"
