Ok folks, here we go. Things are warming up here in Gunnison. Stream and Rivers (the East, Taylor & Gunnison) are rising and the fish are hopping, too. Highs already in the 50's and the ice will be coming off in the next few weeks on the Blue Mesa. Then the 'Mac attack,' as lake (mackinaw) and brown lunkers linger, hungrily in the shallows. Wahoo!  Check out the cool stories from some guide-friends below, please.  Also, sign up now for 2010 Blue Mesa Spring Fishing Tournament which is on May 1st (Sat) & 2nd (Sun).  See for registration forms and regulations.

We've asked different fishing guides from around the area to give us some helpful information or a fish tail or two. Enjoy!

Ice out on Blue Mesa reservoir is a very unique time of year with many great opportunities! It usually occurs somewhere between the first and last week of April depending on the weather. Ice out should arrive around mid to late April this year depending upon how warm it is in the next few weeks. Once the ice thaws, a feeding frenzy for brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, and kokanee salmon ignites across the lake. This frenzy is the result of a combination of a long, hard winter with limited food access and warming water temperatures that increase the fish's metabolism. Since the water temperatures are still fairly cool, the water column has not stratified which allows fish of all species and sizes to roam the shallow areas of the lake in search of food. This equates into many great quality and quantity opportunities for Sport Fish Colorado's clients!!

Off Season Treasures

Every angler familiar with the Gunnison / Crested Butte area knows how good the trout fishing is in the summer months. Great dry fly action with Green Drakes, beautiful weather, awesome scenery, and fish in every likely piece of water. Sounds great, well it is, but summer is not the only special time for anglers.

Spring and Fall offer excellent opportunities for those looking to wet a line. March is the true kick off to the fly-fishing season. While many are still drilling holes in the ice on Blue Mesa and Taylor reservoirs the rivers are breaking up and the fishing heats up. The Taylor, East, and Gunnison rivers all receive a great midge hatch and fly anglers get their first chance of the new year at dry fly fishing. The Taylor River Catch and Release area really gets hot with many trout over 10lbs. being caught almost every day. The spring fishing stays good until May when it gets hot enough to start the full on run off season.

Fall is another overlooked time of year to catch some fish. With the yellow leaves, crisp mountain air, and great fishing this may be my favorite time of year. The summer crowds are all but gone and the Gunnison River is fishing great! The great fishing is in most part due to the Kokanee salmon that run the rivers every season. The trout love to eat the Kokanee eggs because they provide a lot of nutrients before winter sets in. The brown trout also become extremely aggressive as they prepare to spawn late in the fall. Fishing remains excellent in October and through the first two weeks in November.

Next time your planning your Gunnison Country vacation don't miss the boat on the great spring and fall opportunities.

As spring approaches, we will be entering some of the best fishing Gunnison has to offer. Ice out conditions on Blue Mesa mean peak season for Lake Trout and Brown Trout. 8 of the last 9 state record lake trout have come out of Blue Mesa, the most recent a 50.46 pounder caught in late May of 2007. Cooler water temperatures and the spawing activities of many bait species bring these big predators to shallower waters, making them more accessable to anglers. Look for the peak fishing to occur Late-April through the month of May.

As seasons change from spring to summer, the larger predator fish retreat to the cooler, deeper waters. Kokanee salmon will begin to school up and become the favorite target of anglers throughout the summer. Blue Mesa is home to one of the largest salmon runs in the US with over 3 million fry stalked anually.
