From the Owner...
This is our first newsletter to you, our friends, guests and neighbors. We hope you have found our website and the resources in our lobby helpful. We have a great staff. Many of you know Thelma Hildreth and Quincey Severson. They really run the place and ensure a good guest experience. In future newsletters you will learn their personal stories harking back to two primary Gunnison institutions - Western State College and ranching.

My family and I have owned the Water Wheel for over four years. We have our primary home in Pueblo, Colorado. It is literally just three right turns (and a three hours drive east on highway 50) out of the Water Wheel parking lot to our house overlooking the Arkansas River. I was an eye surgeon in Pueblo for many years. Multiple sclerosis cut short my career, but opened the door to purchasing the Water Wheel Inn.

Awards Night
Jim Valenzuela, MD
Water Wheel Inn Owner
I don't walk well, but, thanks to the blessed geometry of a circle, I pedal with joy. My boys and I had frequently enjoyed biking - road and mountain - on the west side of the continental divide. It seemed natural to invest in a business in Gunnison. The boys enjoy many of the other great recreational opportunities here; skiing, snowboarding, climbing and fly fishing. We'll share some of these experiences in the months to come, hoping to whet your appetites to join in.

Every spring the boys and I prepare for one of the week long Colorado road bike tours, either Ride-the-Rockies or Bicycle Tour of Colorado. And for many years I have joined some fellows my age in September for a multiday mountain bike ride. This last year we rode the Alpine Loop. I do best on dirt roads or smooth dual track. In spring, summer and fall '10, I invite you to join me in scheduled one day climbs around Gunnison: Engineer Pass out of Lake City; Cement Creek, Ohio Creek, Kebler Pass. Dates and details will be available on the website and coming newsletters.

We are looking to engage your conversation and your continued patronage. Let us know what you are interested in hearing about.

We hope you stay tuned.

Top 10 Favorite Things to Do!
Tammy Scott (Gunnison Chamber Director): "My favorite thing about our valley is the crystal clear streams and rivers. From the rushing white water of spring runoff to the low clear water of the fall, to just sit next to the Taylor River and watch the water and smell the trees is the most relaxing thing I can think of! The high mountain streams and waterfalls are also a favorite making any hike worth the effort!"

Andy Hanks (Gunnison High School Principle): "One of my favorite things to do in this valley is in the summer, when the hatches of bugs swarm in the bushes along the river, is to float the Gunnison River with my family, and teaching my 11 year son and 8 year old daughter how to fly fish. My family continues to build wonderful memories in this fantastic valley in which we all live in."

Jane Tunnadine(owner of Colorado Fitness): "One of my most favorite things to do in Gunnison is to meet with the Crested Butte Mountain Runners for their summer fun runs all around the valley. We run at Hartman Rocks in Gunnison at the beginning of the season to kick off our summer of running-that's one of my favorite places to run. Other runs include the famous Cart to Cart run from Crested Butte to CB South along the trails and the Mount Baldy run over Paradise Divide looping back along trail 401. The scenery is amazing everywhere we run and having the company to run with makes each run memorable."

Ken Coleman (City of Gunnison Manager): "My life is pretty simple and it's mostly hanging out with family and friends, yet when I get mobile I tend to enjoy those things close to home...mountain biking at Hartman's, ice skating on natural ice (Blue Mesa and Morrow Point), walking in the downtown talking with friendly folks, town biking on the bike lanes and cruising on the VanTuyl Ranch, and finally cross country skiing on the Ranch."

Dr. Duane Vandenbusche (History Professor @ WSC):
"One of my favorite things to do in the Gunnison valley, is skiing the powder on a beautiful clear day with crystal blue skies in Phoenix Bowl at Crested Butte Mountain Resort."

Jim Swain (Cattleman's Day President): "Mountain Biking in the clean fresh are and enjoying the incredible vistas. Fly fishing in a lonely quite spot. Playing Hockey on the outdoor rink in the evenings. Rodeo and all the 4-H events."

Mike Busse (Chef and Owner, Garlic Mike's Italian Cuisine): "I grew up in New Jersey where there are not many wide open spaces and the pace is very, very fast. You can take the boy out of NJ, but you cannot take the Jersey out of the boy. So, I like to wind down and take a ride up Ohio Pass during the warmer months. The views are absolutely breathtaking!(When I drive to my Montrose location) I really enjoy the views of Blue Mesa.  Both winter and summer offer a completely different landscape. I have a very hectic schedule and the best thing about taking these beautiful short road trips: NO CELLPHONE interuptions!!  NO RECEPTION!!"

Andy Lightbody(Rocky Mountain Television):
"Enjoying the beauty and solitude while ice fishing with family and friends on the Blue Mesa Reservoir."

Chris Dickey (Editor and owner Gunnison Country Times):
"Well, let's see... Anything at Hartman Rocks - biking, trail running, rock climbing, strolling with the kids. Commuting anywhere in town by bicycle or feet. Cross country skiing under the palisades rock formation at Van TuylRanch. Greeting the coffee shop baristas on the way to work in the morning. Seeing a concert at the Gunnison Arts Center. FAC-ing at one of our monthly "Gallery Crawls". Trying to garden in the face of a 365 - day-a-year frost warning. Spending a bluebird fall afternoon watching a WSC football game. Gathering firewood. Spending time in the high country."

Quincey Severson (Sales & Marketing Director Water Wheel Inn): "Horseback riding with my husband into the West Elk Wilderness, enjoying our picnic lunch while breathing in the clean fresh mountain air and searching for wildlife."
