Gulf Shores Plantation's Guide to Vacationing with Children

Most children find the idea of packing for a vacation fascinating - give them a bag of their own. The bag should be large enough to hold a few toys, paper, crayons, and snacks. It won't lessen the load; the idea is to teach responsibility and to get the kids excited about the trip.

If your trip entails a long car ride, take frequent breaks to play tag at a park, wander around a town, jump rope at a highway rest stop, or even go shopping at the mall. Everyone will stay saner and sleep better. Give the children something to look forward to by creating activity kits. List facts and landmarks relating to every state you'll pass through and make packets that aren't to be opened until you reach the state line.

Once you arrive at the Plantation and get settled, have each family member plan an afternoon. Make it mandatory that everyone participate in the chosen activity, whether it's arcade games at Adventure Zone, afternoon tea, miniature golf, pottery, painting, or a cannon ball contest at one of our seven pools.

The Gulf Coast offers an abundance of things to see and do. Ferries, especially ones that transport cars, never fail to entertain kids. Take the ferry to Dauphin Island and walk to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, an award-winning aquarium that features local animals and habitat. Explore historic Fort Gaines, Fort Morgan's sister fort. Spend an afternoon at Fort Morgan or the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, both just a few miles from the Plantation. Turn your visit into a scavenger hunt. Check out our website for more local attractions.
.
Stop by our Registration Center and let your kids browse through the brochures and suggest places to visit. Brochures are also great for scrapbooks.

Stock up on interactive snacks: animal crackers for a trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, or shark-shaped fruit treats or Goldfish for the beach. That'll get the kids excited (especially since it's food they can play with).

Fill up the fridge from the local grocery store, or don't go to the store at all. Check out the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau for a list of Concierge or Delivery services that will do the shopping for you.

Let your kids decide where you'll eat. Giving kids a sense of autonomy helps them feel invested in the vacation. If they don't know the options, ask them to talk about what they'd like to have for dinner and narrow down the possibilities from there. You'll find lots of great family friendly restaurants to choose from. Check out our list of dining options.

Give each child a journal and a disposable camera. Encourage them to observe the places they visit by photographing, drawing, or writing about them. Save the journals as keepsakes.

With preplanning and a little creativity, vacationing with children can be an enjoyable experience for the entire family. The memories you make will last a lifetime.
