| Kiawah Island Named as America's Happiest Seaside Town |
|
Kiawah Island earned the No. 1 spot in Coastal Living magazine's first ever ranking of the "most blissful places to live” among the coast. The Magazine's 15th Anniversary publication names the distinctive barrier island as the "Happiest Seaside Town” in America.
The June issue is in newsstands today and showcases the countless attractive qualities that marks Kiawah as an annual vacation spot among its guests. Noting its "ten miles of unspoiled fine beach; wild-growing palmetto, oak and magnolia trees; a veritable Noah's Ark's worth of mammals and rare birds”, its proximity to another top U.S. City and plethora of outdoor recreational activities "makes the ideal possible: a vacation- like lifestyle with easy access to commerce and culture.”

| What's the best beach in America you ask? According to "Dr. Beach” Kiawah is on the list! Noted in the May 25th USA Today travel section detailing the best U.S. beaches, America's "Happiest Seaside Town” rounded out the top ten. Clinching the number 9 spot, Kiawah's own Beachwalker Park made the list for its 5th consecutive year.
Each year University Professor and coastal expert Stephen Leatherman ranks America's beaches "based on 50 detailed criteria, from public safety and noise to water quality and sand softness.” According to his website, "Dr. Beach” annually investigates 650 public access beaches along our nation's Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific coasts. "Dr. Beach” uses a sliding scale from 1 to 5 in evaluating the specific criteria categories to determine each beaches quality. In explaining the survey's outline, he details it is "primarily designed for swimming beaches…the best beaches for walking, scenery, sports and other activities.”
As the only public beach on Kiawah Island's 10 mile span, Beachwalker Park has a designated swimming area with a seasonal lifeguard on duty, snack bar, picnic area and beach chair rentals. Join us for a visit and experience the award winning beach and natural beauty of the island. |
| Local Seabrook Islander Takes on Coasters |
|
|
| As reported in a recent article by The Post and Courier, local Seabrook Island resident Cindy Ellsworth has turned her passion into a local business of highly sought out souvenirs. Following a motivating visit to an Atlanta arts fair, Ellsworth was inspired to create something she found particularly interesting - custom decorated coasters. After seeing these at the arts fair with images of local Georgia hot spots and restaurants, Ellsworth couldn't get the idea of creating something similar out of her mind.
Ellsworth has set out to make similar coasters distinctively related to the Charleston and low country market. Decorated with common low country landmarks, she adds her own personal touch to each individual coaster through its design. Throughout waves of trial and error, Ellsworth developed an exclusive process for creating each coaster. According to the article, she "takes photographs of popular restaurants and landmarks around Charleston and adheres them to squares of tumbled marble from Italy. She then coats them with 3 layers of polyurethane and glues cork on the back." Next, she personalizes each coaster with her signature and stamps them with company name "Coastal Carolina Co". Overall, the 20 step- four day long process results in a perfect coaster. Ellsworth "check[s] each to make sure they are prefect... We are really picky. We want them to be the best they can be."
Founded in 2010 and located in the Bohiket Marina, Coastal Carolina Co. has emerged into a profitable business that carries coasters with a variety of local images like restaurants, landmarks, colleges and golf courses. In 2011, she sold 5,000 coasters and hopes to double her sales this year. The coasters can be found at the Charleston Farmer's Market on Saturdays in Marion Square and several stores in the greater Charleston area including Kiawah and Seabrook.
